Baptist Chemists Latest Updates

July 2007

1.   Eco-Environmental Science Camp: 51 Form 1-2 students from eight schools participated in the camp. During the 5-day event, the students took part in a series of interactive activities, including hands-on experiments, dialogue with professors, data research, group presentation, field trip to mangroves sites, as well as lighter moments of songs, games and artistic competition. At the conclusion, we were truly impressed by the students’ great enthusiasm in acquiring new knowledge, excellent team spirit and exceptionally high standard in data research and presentation skills.

Credit must go to our department’s team of scientific officers under the leadership of Prof. Chan Wing Hong who did a brilliant job in making the entire event extremely well-organized and well-received. This is fully demonstrated by the Opinion Survey, in which over 60% of the participants strongly agree/agree that: they enjoyed staying on the U campus; understood the lectures; science concepts were clearly presented; loved the theme activities; and the group leaders (chem. undergrad.) and scientific officers were very helpful and readily available. And above all, they would recommend the camp to their friends.

Baptist Chemists were privileged to be a co-organizer of the event and shared its success. A group of young alumni of the 2000s were also given the valuable chance to host a session on “English for Science” to gain experience in coaching young kids. You may see them in action as well as highlights of the entire camp at http://www.baptistchemists.site.hk/gallery.asp.

A positive review by the Young Post (SCMP) can also be viewed at http://www.prosplus.com.hk/bchemists/YoungPostArticle.html.

Given such positive response, the Department and the alumni association have initially agreed to hold a second session next summer. We are sure that we will be able to build on this year’s experience to make future events better catered to the needs of secondary students.

2.   Prof. Chan Wing Hong, after nine years at the helm of Chemistry Department and led the department through a period of development, has decided to relinquish his administrative role and to focus more on research. He will be on sabbatical leave to Sydney, Australia for six months, returning next January. Meanwhile, Prof. Cai Zongwei has been appointed the new Head of the department. Prof. Cai is an internationally renowned expert in dioxin and director of the HKBU dioxin analysis laboratory which is the only lab of its kind in Hong Kong. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Prof. Chan for his support and advice to Baptist Chemists through the years and wish him all the best in his future research work. We are also confident that Prof. Cai and his faculty members will continue to guide us in our mission of fostering strong alumni relationship with the department.

3.   Solidarity Fund Sponsorship Programme: Presentation of the various awards for the 2006/07 academic year has been held on 26 May. See full list of the awardees at http://www.prosplus.com.hk/BCAwardeesList/bcawardeeslist_06-07.htm.

4.   Visit to Zhuhai Campus: Some alumni have expressed interest in visiting the University’s campus in Zhuhai (United International College). We are planning a two-day, one-night tour for mid-September. In addition to campus visit, other sightseeing items will also be included. If you are interested, do drop us an email. That would help us have some preliminary idea of how large a group we could expect.

5.   Alumni Sports & Fun Day. Our younger alumni have proposed a Saturday afternoon gathering for friendly ball games: basketball, badminton, table tennis etc. Or maybe some mind-testing games. They have also volunteered to take up the organization work. Let’s look forward to hear from them.

6.   Science Alumni Football Tournament: Following the highly successful Science Alumni BBQ, everyone agrees that the five science alumni communities should have more joint functions. This time, we will meet in the football fields. It will not be an event just for football lovers but a carnival where non-players and alumni family members could all pitch in. The tentative date is mid-November. Do look out for more news of the event.
